Sydney ABCD Meet-Up :: Let's talk about Instagram
You may be over Facebook. Twitter is just 140 characters, and Pinterest is a bit of a solitary pursuit. But are you on Instagram? This social media platform is tailor-made for those of us who are more visual by nature - it's about communicating with images instead of just words. Instagram is full of interesting, creative people sharing happy things. Interested to hear more, or in sharing your thoughts?

the red thread :: advertising
The first signs of Christmas have begun to pop up in the shops - have you noticed? It's spurred me on to get busy crafting up a storm, with handmade gifts and wrapping ideas, and to start thinking about shopping and gift lists.
As well as revamping my blog I am going to begin to work with advertisers and sponsors, starting with the festive season. This will be in the form of banner advertising in the sidebar as well as sponsored posts and gift guides. During the festive season my gift guides and posts will be full of inspiration and shopping resources.
If you think your product is in line with my aesthetic and content here on the red thread please email me for rates and more details. Sponsored posts: I only ever blog about things that I love and that I think will be a great fit for my readers, and with full disclosure. This is an example of a recent sponsored post.
If you're interested in working with me to feature your brand in a creative way please get in touch.
Dear Readers,
Please don't worry! My blog is not going to turn into one big paid ad site. I have worked hard over the past 4 years to establish my voice and integrity here and that's something that I'm not going to lose. My aim is to spend more time here bringing you more of what you've come to love and expect and what I enjoy: inspiration and finds in design, craft and interiors. To do that I need to be able to make some sort of income for my efforts. I'm sure you get that :)

I'm so excited - it's going to be fun. I'll see you soon. Have a great week.

INSPIRATION :: Basket Weaving
Over the weekend I learnt how to weave a basket from rattan and palm inflorecence. Catriona Pollard held a one-off class in conjunction with her exhibition at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery. It was so satisfying to learn how to weave and to come away with such a beautiful object.
I took this photo of some of her pieces at the exhibition. Take a look at Catriona's blog to see more of her creations.
Harriet Goodall, another Sydney-based artist and weaver, recently held a class at Megan Morton's The School where they made these rattan baskets dipped in neon paint. So gorgeous.
These beauties were made by traditional weavers of the Basket Weavers of North Queensland.
Weaving with a conscience: German artist Cordula Kehrer's Bow Bins. Cordula works with traditional craftspeople in The Phillipines using sustainably harvested rattan and broken plastic bins.
I'm hooked on weaving now. It was such a lovely and relaxing way to spend Saturday afternoon. Weaving is time consuming but so satisfying. I'm now experimenting with different materials and techniques and will put together a little 'how to' in the coming weeks. Weaving and macrame - my two new obsessions. Watch this space!
Are you enjoying any new-to-you crafts at the moment?

Sharing :: Linking with Love :: Playing Fair
I've been busy working on the design and content for the "new and improved" the red thread blog [due later this month -yay!] and part of that includes compiling copyright and usage info for tutorials, free printables and downloads. So I've been thinking a lot about how people share and give credit for things they find on the internet.
Have you seen this?
There was a lot of discussion about Pinterest and intellectual property and crediting around the blogs earlier this year. The image above is from LINKwithlove, and it's part of the Pinterest Project. "A kind social media experiment to reach as many Pinterest users as possible (and Pinterest) to raise awareness about the importance of LINKING to the original source + respecting intellectual property online."
LINKwithlove is all about creating awareness and being mindful and respectful when we share on the internet - on our blogs as well as on Pinterest or any form of social media. The original source always deserves a credit. It's not enough to credit an image on a blog as "found on Pinterest", or the with the word "via" or "neon clutch" or something similar as the link. It's just as easy and far more respectful and kind for the link to be the name of the artist/ etsy seller / shop, etc.
I recently admired a ring on a blog. The link was "found here". I clicked through to another blog to find a link with the word "via". I clicked again. And again. I went through seven different blogs (I'm not exaggerating) and gave up in the end when the link was to the home page of a another blog and not to the actual post. It wasn't the blog of the person who created the ring. None of the links were to the original source and none of the bloggers named the designer/maker/seller. I don't know where that blog trail ended, but I do know that it didn't end in a sale. It was frustrating for me, but more than that - incredibly unfair and frustrating for the person selling the ring. Have you experienced something similar to this?
LINKwithlove talks about sharing in a way that is ethical, respectful, educated and kind. It's not hard.
Please pin and blog the image above from LINKwithlove. Grab a LINKwithlove button for your blog and show your support and spread the word.
Further reading: a great article on Pinterest from LoveLife blog, and one titled "Pinterest is changing how I blog" from Living Locurto.
There has also been a lot of discussion about Pinterest and copyright implications for users and creatives... that's a whole other minefield!
Edit: I forgot to mention I recently discovered that you can use TinEye to do a reverse search to try to find the source of an image.
Edit (again): I just came across a post on A Subtle Revelry with detailed steps on another way to find the original source of an image.

School holidays and keeping it real
Two weeks of holidays are drawing to a close - school goes back next week. Yesterday we decided to spend a quiet afternoon crafting after spending the morning with friends which involved lots of antics in the pool for the kids. To get the craft things we wanted we had to brave the garage which is piled high with boxes that still need to be unpacked since our move 6 months ago. The boxes mostly contain all those things that you're not sure where to put or if you really want them at all. You know those ones? The last to be packed and the last to be unpacked. All compounded by the fact that we moved from a three bedroom house to a one and a bit bedroom apartment. The boxes are numbered and I have a list of what's in them but it's the sheer volume that's daunting.
Summer has well and truly arrived here in Sydney and that meant hauling out the summer clothes and getting Roxy to try things on to see if they still fit. There they are all over the sofa in my bedroom, as well as clothes from yesterday and Roxy's (enormous!) softies. The crafting mess is still on the dining table together with a half eaten packet of crackers Roxy opened this morning and boxes of craft stuff still on the floor. My desk and the area around it is piled high with things that need sorting. The bin needs emptying. Look familiar?
School is back next week, so I hope then to be able to finally finish the bathroom, swap over the summer and winter clothes, find a place for all the craft things and get sorted enough to take the photos and share the promised posts. No promises on getting the garage sorted any time soon though.

INSPIRATION :: Advanced Style
We're bombarded at every turn with images of gorgeous young things wearing the latest designer clothes, but how often do we stop to look at stylish older women? New Yorker Ari Seth Cohen does exactly that. He's like The Sartorialist for women of advanced years. How great is that?
He says: I roam the streets of New York looking for the
most stylish and creative older folks. Respect your elders and let these
ladies and gents teach you a thing or two about living life to the
fullest. Advanced Style offers proof from the wise and silver-haired set
that personal style advances with age.
Are you inspired? How can we not be? I love that these women have such a great sense of self and style, and that it seems to be an important part of who they are, as well as being key to them living their best life. All this regardless of what society expects or rather, doesn't expect of women of a 'certain age'.
Visit the Advanced Style blog to see many, many more inspirational images.

MY HOME :: loving Freedom
Since moving house and making a fresh start earlier this year the decorating process has been an ongoing one. You can see previous posts of the process here, here and here. I've always had a clear vision for my new space and a definite budget which has meant splurging on a few things and finding some real bargains as well.
I'm now at the stage where I'm adding the finishing touches and as the budget is beyond stretched I'm trying not to be lured by shiny new things! So I was excited when Freedom asked me if I'd like a store voucher to shop their new collection. Yes please!
I had a good think about what I need and what would work in my space. My style is generally pretty eclectic and what I genuinely love about Freedom is that their range of furniture and homewares is on trend but also has enough breadth to work with different tastes and styles. I love that they don't do 'cookie cutter' products.
One thing that I really needed was a bookshelf in my bedroom. I have a lot of books. I'm trying to keep my apartment uncluttered and I was struggling to find a solution. Cue the Spine bookshelf.
Next, in my living room I was in need of a floor lamp. For me lighting is often the element I have the most trouble deciding on but when I saw the Studio I knew it was the one. I love it's tripod legs and utilitarian simplicity and at only $149 I would have bought it even without the gift voucher.
On to my verandah... I'd made some cushion covers for my outdoor seating, but the sun had faded them and they were looking a bit tired. I saw and loved Freedom's range of outdoor cushions then I discovered they are UV fade resistant, water resistant. Perfect. They work well with my vintage quilt, and in store they were styled with contemporary outdoor furniture and they also looked fab.
