hello there

15 December 2009

Well hello there, I'm surprised (but grateful) you're still hanging out with it being so quiet around here lately... I'm still trying to get on top of things but not really succeeding yet. I have blog posts planned, including a GiVeAwAy later this week... when I find the time to photograph some things.

If you've just found me here welcome! I met so many lovely folks at all the markets I've been doing and some of you may have found your way here. I feel like you've just dropped in for a cuppa and a chat and caught me with dishes piled high in the sink and beds unmade... don't get the wrong impression that's not what it's usually like here at the red thread. I'm normally greeting visitors at the door, floors gleaming and muffins in the oven.

My apologies. Things will be back to normal here soon I hope. Although with Christmas looming my plan is to get work finished and orders packed this week and move on to Christmas preparation next week. Then I might have some time off. I'm so behind... Our tree is up but that's the extent of it for now.

Loving this evocative desktop image from PixelGirl Presents found via How About Orange. (Even though it's nothing like our December in Australia)

Tiel Seivl-Keevers is a Brisbane based artist and designer who creates really delightful work. Working under the name Tsk Tsk, Tiel applies her graphic illustrations and designs to a range of things like greeting cards (including a lovely new range of Christmas cards), fabric and limited edition prints. And not forgetting her original paintings which are awesome.

You can find Tiel's gorgeous work in her online shop, her etsy shop, and at Udessi online gallery. She also has a blog.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

13 December 2009

No wonder the kids are terrified... some of those Santas look scary and down right creepy. I love the last guy though.

Roxy was very scared of Santa for her first few years, so we just waved from a distance. I find these photos hilarious, although it makes me wonder just what the parents were thinking forcing their children to be held by a stranger that clearly terrified them.

This photo was taken of me when Santa was having his power nap.

When I uploaded this photo it made me remember that when I'm doing markets a lot of people say that they think I would have looked just like one of my vintage face fabric panels when I was little. Our colouring and hair styles are definitely similar.

A friend sent me an email with the Scary Santa images attached, so I can't credit the source.

The downhill run

10 December 2009

Only 2 more markets to go now and then I can switch from madly making to madly preparing for Christmas.

This afternoon and tonight I'll be at the Mosman twilight market and on Saturday at Allie's Attic in Paddington - details here. Do come and say hi if you're in the neighbourhood and help support handmade by doing some of your Christmas shopping - I'm sure there'll be lots of lovely goodies.

Next week I'll have a round up of the all the markets I've been doing - I've met some wonderful creative people and seen lots of lovely things I'd like to share.
Edit: ooops, it's next week already... I'll be doing these posts in the new year now.

We did manage to get our Christmas tree up last Sunday, which is a start at least. Apart from that I have done nothing. How are your holiday season preparations going?

If you're in need of some inspiration you can't go past Pia Jane Bijkerk's always gorgeous blog for some lovely Christmas gift ideas and these beautifully styled images (I wouldn't expect anything less from this talented woman!).

Revisiting :: my studio storage

09 December 2009

This is another post from a year ago that I thought would be fun to revisit.

Hi I'm Lisa, I'm a Virgo... this is my storage

If you're unfamiliar with the traits of Virgos, we are perfectionists and obsessive neat freaks. The phrase "a place for everything and everything in its place" must have been written by one of us. I thought I'd show you the shelves in my studio/office, and realised what an accurate reflection of me they are. Kind of sad really isn't it?

Of course my shelves are the ubiquitous Expidit shelves from Ikea... as seen in half the homes around the world. My aqua files are from KikkiK, the neutral coloured boxes are Ikea, and the patterned boxes and folders are cheap ones that I covered with paper. I'd had the boring Lever Arch files for maybe 10 years in my cupboard, and I covered the spines with paper to achieve a fast and cheap makeover. The patterned boxes are just any box that comes may way (like software boxes, gift boxes, etc), which I have covered. Too easy.

You will also see some of my etsy art purchases and various bits and pieces on display. And I've succumbed to the trend of organising my books in order of colour - I love the look, but it does make things harder to find. Which sort of creates a dilemma for my ordered Virgo sensibility: do I go for the beauty of the look, or the logic of order?
