Shopping in Tokyo Part 4 :: Tokyo Midtown

21 July 2009

Tokyo Midtown is a beautifully designed shopping center in Roppongi. I think I loved it because everything was so considered and 'just so'. The shops are all upmarket and great for window shopping, and there's also the Suntory Museum (no, not a museum of alcohol) where I saw a couple of fantastic design/art exhibitions. I did buy a few little bits and pieces, but I was happy just to take it all in.

Isn't this the most amazing sculptural crocheted centerpiece.

Even the benches are works of art in themselves (photo of Roxy taken on our visit last year).

This is the smoking room. Most shopping centers have one, but the one at Roppongi Hills was the most beautifully designed smoking room I saw - it even had a lovely view. (I have to say that the idea of a smoking room turns my stomach. The idea of smoking turns my stomach in itself, but imagine being in a tiny closed room with lots of people puffing away.)

The Chloe shop had semi-opaque glass, so the colours and shapes of the clothes formed lovely abstract shapes and designs.

There was some beautiful fruit for sale in the downstairs food section, like 2 bunches of grapes a steal at AU$135, and these 2 mangoes and a small box of cherries for AU$680.

Monday BlogDay :: My Folk Lover

20 July 2009

There are so many types of blogs that inspire me, but possibly the ones that inspire the most are those written by artists about their creative process.

Melbourne artist Catherine Campbell is a favourite of mine, so I find her blog, My Folk Lover, a joy to read. Catherine blogs about her inspirations - ranging from vintage photos and china to quilts and stamps - and her work in progress to completion.

Catherine's Etsy shop, also called My Folk Lover, is stocked with prints of her beautiful work, as well as the occasional original piece.

The Lost Week: Lemon & Honey, Doonas and DVDs

19 July 2009

I've lost a week from my life. We were absolutely flattened by the flu, with the three of us in bed (the same bed) for a whole week. We were this close to making a middle of the night dash to the hospital with Roxy on Tuesday night, but managed to make it through to the morning to see our doctor.

We drank lots of lemon and honey in hot water and slept in feverish fits. Towards the end of the week we were up to some entertainment and took turns in choosing DVDs to watch. When it was Roxy's turn to choose we successfully steered her in the direction of Charlotte's Web, Kung Fu Panda and Happy Feet and away from Barbie: The Magic Pegasus, Barbie: The Princess and The Pauper, Barbie: The Nutcracker... I'm sure you get my drift! Of course when Stu and I got to decide we had to make sure we chose something G rated. That was how we came to be watching the 1960 Jerry Lewis movie Cinderfella. Stuart is a huge Jerry fan and has all his movies, although I'd never seen Cinderfella before.

Now it's not a great movie by any means, but I really loved the sets, costumes (by Edith Head) and art direction. The use of colour in the costumes and sets was the thing that struck me the most. Here are a few of my favourite stills from the movie. Please forgive the quality of the images, they were shot with a feverish hand while laying in bed with a child on top of me.

And a bit of trivia. In the movie, the shot of Jerry Lewis leaving the ball was done in one take. He ran the 70 stairs in 7 seconds, collapsing at the top. Jerry was rushed to hospital, spent 4 days in an oxygen tent and delayed filming for 2 weeks. If you watch this YouTube clip (start at about 4:40) you can see his stair climbing feat.

It's nice to be back, and nice to see you again.

A Quick Hello

14 July 2009

It seems like half of Sydney is sick at the moment with colds, flu and nasty viruses... Including Roxy, Stu and I.

I'll be back here at the blog when I'm up to it. Until then it's back under the doona for me. You stay well!

This image of antique birdcages has nothing to do with this post, but I liked it and thought you might too. It's from an article on Chinese antiques in Wallpaper*.
