Rainy, grey, windy long weekend

07 October 2008

Here in Sydney it was a pretty dismal long weekend weather-wise. We did manage a couple of walks and I collected some lovely things as inspiration, like this beautiful open seed pod. The diameter of this tiny opened pod is less than 1.5cm.

On Saturday I also managed to paint some more eggs and some bowls which I'm making from ostrich eggs. The brightly coloured ostrich egg isn't really me in terms of colour, but I enjoyed experimenting with it.

On the subject of eggs, one day last week one of our hens could only manage to lay a half size egg... the egg in the back of the photo is a standard size chicken's egg. It can't be easy squeezing out a big egg every day!

I hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

The Red Thread in the blogosphere

06 October 2008

I was thrilled for my work to be included on 2 fabulous blogs in the last week: modamuse, a site that promotes Australian and New Zealand artisans and designers, and Bloesem Kids, which showcases beautiful things from around the world designed for children. You can read the posts here and here. Thank you Nancy and Jessica, and Irene for writing about The Red Thread!

New photos

04 October 2008

I spent a morning at my friend Donna's house this week taking some photos for my website. Donna has a great eye for interior styling and fabulous taste - so of course her house is gorgeous. You only get a glimpse of it in these photos, but as you can see she has some lovely furniture.

I hate having my photo taken, but I needed to have it done... it's less painful if it's done quickly and with a sense of fun. Thanks Donna!

Oh and apart from being a wonderful stylist Donna is also an awesome cook. For lunch she whipped up the best marinated tofu and a huge salad. Now before you screw your nose up at the thought of tofu, it was actually sooo tasty that I can't wait to make it myself.... or better still for Donna to make it for me again!

I *Heart* Fridays: I *Heart* etsy

03 October 2008

One of the biggest time wasters for me is looking around etsy. I LOVE etsy. It's incredibly easy to spend a lot of time looking at the wonderful work of so many indie artists and crafters. I do find though that things are often priced too cheaply. The etsy marketplace is very competitive, and I know first hand how difficult it is to price your own art - and I love a bargain! - but I think a lot of the time people are doing themselves and each other a disservice. The intrinsic value of a handcrafted piece is undermined when the price point is too low. And of course the creator is not being reimbursed any where near adequately for their time and talent.

Below are some etsy things that I *heart* at the moment.

Clockwise from top left:
Sometimes of the Land print from My Folk Lover. See more here.
Pocketbook from Little Paper Bird. See more here.
Tree and Bird from Brenda Rose.

Little Bird Cages
from Mummy Sam.

Two Teas limited edition print from Betsy Walton See more here.
Anemone Outline Hoop Earrings from Abigail Percy
. (I really, really want these... maybe one day!) See more here.

Happy Friday!
