LOVING :: Mano Jars

30 May 2012

I am loving these gorgeous Mano ceramic jars with their bamboo lids by Danish designer Jeanette List Amstrup. The organic shapes, the pale gelato colour palette and the contrasting materials are perfect.

 The beautifully shaped milk jugs (above) form part of the Mano range which also includes bowls and plates. They are available in the US from Horne and can be shipped internationally. But for now I'll just admire them from afar.

A Happy Home

29 May 2012

There's nothing like a blank white canvas with splashes of vivid colour to create a sunny, bright and happy looking home. And nobody seems to do it quite so well as the Scandinavians.

Whenever I feel like looking at beautiful interiors I check out the Scandi mags... I know that there will always be something to inspire me. It's just what I needed to brighten things up on this grey, rainy autumnal Sydney day.

Tokyo Design Festa

28 May 2012

I first went to Design Festa in 2008 and I was blown away, and couple of weeks ago when I was in Tokyo I went for the third time. You can read my previous posts here. Design Festa is so full of fabulous energy and thousands of exhibitors (I think there were 7,000 this time). I walked around for 6 hours non stop and still didn't get to see any installation art or performances. It's huge! I didn't take any close ups of people's work this time, but you can see some on previous posts, and I'll show you what I bought soon. It's not all as outlandish as these photos might lead you to believe!

Melanie and I tried to meet up at Design Festa, but it didn't quite work out. Check out Melanie's post on Design Festa (with great photos) and also Ebony's.

The next Design Festa is on in Tokyo on the weekend of November 10 and 11. If you love handmade you'll love Design Festa.

Perfect Sydney Weekend

21 May 2012

On the weekend we went to Palm Beach (just over an hour north of central Sydney) and had the most glorious, relaxed, fun day celebrating a friend's birthday. Although it's almost winter, the day was pretty warm and perfect and the kids spent the entire day running on the sand, splashing in the water and climbing on the rocks. With only a short break for lunch.

How gorgeous is this house?! It's one of the original Palm Beach houses, built in the 1920s, and fronting right onto the Pitwater side of Palm Beach. It belongs to a friend of the birthday girl, and I felt so lucky to spend the day at such a special spot. The top two photos were taken when I was standing in the garden - that's how close it is to the water. The adults had a civilised lunch on the verandah while the kids tucked into their bbq sausages in the garden.

We drove home after dark, happy and tired. It was one of those perfect days.

The second one about cushions

My bedroom is a work in progress. When I showed it to you the other week it was pretty much all white, but I needed more colour. I have a plan to make a quilt - all the fabric is cut, but I have to get in and actually make it. It will have lots of white in it with splashes of colour, which is pretty much how I like my entire home to be.

So until the quilt is made I have injected some colour with, you guessed it, cushions.

I made the long cushion for the TV room in our last house from some Kokka fabric gifted to me by Marina. The new addition is the Ditsy cushion (great name!). The sweet vintage looking floral print cushion is a dark coral colour with tiny white and aqua flowers. It adds a nice bright solid feel to my mixed and matched collection.

There are two other Ditsy cushions with the same lovely vintage feel, in aqua (the colour in the photo above is more accurate than the website photo) and dark blue. The florally vintagey goodness isn't the best part either... I was happy when I read the tag and discovered that the inserts are made from 100% recycled drink bottles. Each cushion has saved 42 bottles from landfill. Who would've thought?! I love that. Equally good is the price: $14.95. Absolute bargain!

Get them at Freedom, while they last.

Disclosure: The folks at Freedom kindly gifted me the Ditsy cushions. I only ever blog about things I love and that fit with the aesthetic of my blog. This was a no brainer.

The first one about cushions

20 May 2012

Well, if you know me you'll know that really this is far from my first blog post about cushions, but it's the first one for today.

When my friend Steph recently blogged about Curio & Curio I discovered their hand screen printed, limited edition Dot Cushions. I knew that I just had to have one. It's totally fab, and positively glows, particularly on dull days. Here it is on my new totally sensible and extremely comfy linen sofa. It's cosying up to another fave, the Ribbons cushion from Pony Rider.

Melbourne based stylist Clair Wayman and her partner Nick are behind the Curio & Curio and Two Ruffians labels - you can read more about them on The Design Files.

This is Where...

16 May 2012

I found this note from Roxy placed prominently on my desk early last week.

To add some context, this is one of the songs in high rotation in our house at the moment.

More about my trip soon.

Loving :: Beneath The Sun

11 May 2012

I bought this tea towel recently (yes, another tea towel!), and I'm going to hang it on the wall. The colours are so joyous - makes me smile every time I look at it.

Beneath the Sun.

Edit: I wrote this post over a week ago and scheduled it to publish while I was away. I've just returned and have been checking in on what I'd missed on my fave blogs. I discovered that Lucy posted an interview with Leah Bartholomew of Beneath the Sun on the same day. Snap! Read it here

abcd :: the wrap up

10 May 2012

Steph and I were very excited to host our recent abcd Saturday Soirée, and even more so to see everyone there enjoying the afternoon. We had lots of fun putting it all together including making decorations and styling the event in our pastels and sparkles theme. There was a lot of behind the scenes organising and crafting going on!

The Ruby L'otel venue was perfect for our get together: light and bright, and relaxed. Anni from Milk & Honey Photography took lots of gorgeous photos which do the soirée more justice than my words can...

Steph and I have lots of fun putting the abcd events together - thanks Steph for everything! And thank you to everyone who came along, dressed in pastels and sparkles, and made the Soirée such fun. If you're an artist, blogger, crafter or designer and would like to join us next time you can find abcd here.  Yay!

Inspiration :: Eiko Ishioka

06 May 2012

I took Roxy to the movies yesterday and we saw Mirror Mirror. It was a great movie and for the first time ever I actually liked Julia Roberts... she wasn't playing herself for once. The script was clever and very funny in parts, the casting was spot on, and visually it was fantastic.

The highlight for me was the costume design by the late Eiko Ishioka. The architectural structure of a lot of the garments was truly amazing (but hard to find photos that really show it off), and the saturated colour and incredible detail left me wanting more.

Image source: Mirror Mirror

I'll definitely buy the DVD when it comes out to drink in more of this visual splendour. So amazing.

[apologies for including so many images... I found editing them too hard!]
